Development of a free-form tooth flank optimization method to improve pitting resistance of spur gears

Although steel involute gears are the standard solution for gear transmissions, they tend to suffer from poor pitting resistance. Pitting typically occurs when tooth flanks have high equivalent curvature at contact point and/or is not constant across path leading pressures and development of surface fatigue. In this paper a new optimization method presented produce spur with improved performance compared ones. The represented as B-spline curves, control points which variables problem. constraints were designed ensure that all examined profiles satisfy law gearing do contain any cusps or C 1 discontinuities. Deterministic stochastic algorithms implemented both closed open sets determine optimum profile. results show maximum reduced by 83% corresponding profiles, while deviation mean value 98%. Both optimized where comparatively also through finite element analysis. For case selected pressure developed on set was 77% respective whereas 5%. At same time, bending stresses in slightly lower than those one.
